We were fortunate to intersect once again with one of our all time preferred bands – Cosmic Psychos.
Outside of their home country (Australia) this band has and usually is categorised as obscure and fringe. But for that — we would counter with a notion that perhaps most of the rock music world fan base out there doesn’t really know what they have been missing.
Cosmic Psychos, who first claimed that namesake back in 1984 (from Melbourne VIC) are celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2024 with an extensive tour that includes all over the USA and then Europe beginning — later in May.
We caught their set (warming up for that very venture) when they supported the Pandemonium Festival dates in Australia.
There, single remaining original band member Ross Knight (guitar), drummer Dean Muller, and guitarist John “Mad Macka” McKerring (who joined the group in 2005 & 2006 respectively) played a typical Cosmic Psychos set – a.k.a.: a humorous experience, zero flamboyancy — seriously high quality & bluesy punk rock.
Cosmic Psychos have and continue to tailor their sound directly to the Australian culture’s blue collar/hard working & beer swilling masses – make no mistake about that. Any notion of “woke” sensitivity or some political overtone is used within the most sarcastic context – only. “PC” is non existent with “CP”!
Not to be taken seriously or taken lightly — this band has amazingly now stood the test of time (including with five previous former members) and that tenacity has shown within their catalogue of releases — well worth investigation.
I love punk rock and I have listened to a lot of punk rock over a lot of years now. And I would still not hesitate to argue that two Cosmic Psychos releases in particular ; Cum The Raw Prawn – 2015 and 2018’s Loud Mouth Soup, are two of the best (both clever and stupid) punk rock albums I have ever heard. If neither are those are within your collection currently — well that would be your problem & perhaps it is time to do yourself a solid!
